3 Sewing Podcasts To Inspire Your Sewing Journey

Sewing Podcasts

As a sewist, I've discovered that tuning into sewing podcasts from time to time is both enjoyable and enriching. In fact, a good chunk of my podcast subscriptions revolves around sewing or crafting related content. I believe that sewing podcasts can enhance your sewing journey in several ways. Their greatest benefit, in my opinion, is providing a platform for connecting with fellow hobbyists, which can be particularly important if you don't have sewing buddies. It always feels good when a show leaves you with a sense of being part of a community of people who share the same enthusiasm for sewing as you do. Additionally, depending on the kind of podcast, you can pick up a few nuggets that enhance your sewing knowledge or help build your skillset. Sewing podcasts often delve into educational topics, sometimes even featuring expert guests who are willing to dispense lots of valuable information. Finally, podcasts offer a space for inspiration. I can recall quite a few occasions when I've turned to a podcast episode to pull myself out of a sewing rut. Hearing other sewists share their experiences, challenges, and triumphs can inspire and motivate you to keep creating.

With that said, in this blog post, I'm excited to share my top three favorite sewing-related podcasts, which have become close companions in my sewing journey. I'll discuss my favorite aspects of each podcast and the unique contributions they can make to your experience as a sewist.

1. Declutter and Organize Your Sewing Space

Declutter and Organize Your Sewing Space is an absolute gem for sewists who are interested in managing their sewing space and sewing possessions. Hosted by Nadia Arbach, professional declutterer and organizer, this podcast is a deep dive into sewing organization. If I had to give it an alternative name, it would be Hacking the Psychology of A Sewist.

Declutter and Organize your Sewing Space

I love this podcast so much because it deals with a potential hazard of taking up sewing as a hobby - the over-accumulation of sewing materials and overspending. We've all seen the funny sewing memes about fabric shopping addiction and buying fabric instead of groceries. While these can be relatable moments, it's so important to talk about how we can manage our sewing stash responsibly and Nadia, through her podcast, does this quite effectively by giving expert organization and decluttering tips, as well as explaining problematic sewing mindsets we many need to address.
My favorite part of the podcast run is the range of podcasts that delve into the Seven Major Mindset Issues that can Cause Clutter. In each of these seven episodes, Nadia gives insight into each of the mindset problems sewists and quilters encounter when it comes to their craft and provides practical solutions to address each challenge. The issue that resonated with me most is The Disorganized Thinking mindset issue in season 1, episode 13.

While Declutter and Organize Your Sewing Space is sadly no longer in production, it remains a favorite podcast for me. I encourage you to visit Nadia's website for free resources on decluttering and organizing your sewing space.

2. Seamwork Radio

Listening to a Seamwork Radio episode feels like catching up with your favorite sewing friends and talking about all things personal style, sewing, and creativity. The hosts, Sarai and Haley, have a very calm and conversational speaking style, making the episodes easy to listen to whilst engaged in other activities.

Seamwork Radio Podcast

What sets Seamwork Radio apart is its commitment to providing very practical ideas for building a creative process. I'd say that the podcast at its core is about cultivating a creative sewing mindset. Sarai and Haley touch on the more personal facets of sewing that can unknowingly evoke strong feelings within us and significantly influence how we experience our craft. They are encouraging when broaching all topics and give excellent tips and solutions to common sewing-related challenges. Take a look at some of these episode titles for example How We Sew Through Body Changes, How (And When) to Ditch Your Sewing Plans, Are You Ever Really Satisfied With What You Create?

Another thing I love about Seamwork Radio is that its episodes extensively explore the topic of personal style and sewing. While we sew for varied reasons, many of us can agree that sewing is a wonderful means of achieving personal expression through our clothes. If you haven't already, make sure to listen to their annual Design Your Wardrobe series that delves into how we can intentionally design and build a wardrobe that speaks to our personal needs and style. Each episode has some homework you can do to clarify your sewing and style decisions.

3. Sewing with Threads

Sewing with Threads is another incredible podcast that I've come to love, produced by the knowledgeable editors of Threads Magazine. This podcast offers a unique opportunity for sewists to further explore their hobby through interviews with seasoned industry professionals. Unlike many podcasts that primarily focus on personal experiences and creative processes (and that's perfectly okay), Sewing with Threads provides a comprehensive exploration of the technical aspects of sewing and offers expertise for sewists at all levels, whether you're a beginner, advanced, or somewhere in between.

Sewing with Threads Podcast

My favorite aspect of Sewing with Threads is its ability to bridge the gap between hobbyist sewing and the broader sewing industry. As a listener, I gain access to a wealth of knowledge from various expert perspectives. In fact, through the podcast, I've been introduced to instructors with years of experience whose teaching materials I've then gone on to explore further. For example, after listening to their episode with Joi Mahon on Embracing the Sewing Learning Curve, I searched for 'Joi Mahon' on YouTube and discovered an excellent sewing series called The Joi of Sewing: Sewing Essentials. Someone has kindly compiled it into a public YouTube playlist that you could watch here.

Conclusion

There are so many wonderful sewing-related podcasts but these three resonate most with me. Seamwork Radio for its intentional approach to sewing and creativity, Sewing With Threads for the wealth of knowledge it provides from industry professionals, and Declutter and Organize Your Sewing Space for its timeless tips on creating a healthy sewing space and mindset. Whether you're a novice or an experienced sewist, these podcasts are sure to add value to your sewing journey. Happy listening and happy sewing!
