Sewing Personality Quiz: What Type of Sewist Are You?

What type of sewist are you?

Welcome to my 5 Sewing Personalities Quiz! I’m so excited to share it with you.

I created this sewing quiz after an epiphany I had from watching countless sewing YouTube channels. I noticed that although many of us sewists share a deep love for sewing, we each approach it in completely different ways. For example, some sewists have a lot of unfinished objects (UFOs) and multiple projects going at once, while others meticulously plan every single project and prefer to give each one their full attention.

Sewists: Similar, yet so different

There are so many ways in which our sewing habits and preferences diverge, and that’s completely natural. But here’s the thing: if the mainstream sewing culture around you seems to fit one personality type and you don’t, you might find yourself feeling out of place or even pressured to conform. For instance, imagine you have tons of UFOs piling up, yet you’re scrolling through a beautifully curated Instagram feed where someone proudly showcases their monthly projects. Or you’re watching a YouTuber’s “Everything I Sewed This Summer” video, and it makes you feel like you’re not a “productive” sewist.

This can leave you feeling like you should be more organized or like you should have a finished garment for every month, when that’s just not your style or priority. And that’s only one example of how this issue can manifest. There are many ways we can unintentionally place unnecessary expectations on ourselves.

The 5 sewing personalities based on basic psychology

So, based on my observations and a bit of layman’s psychology, I’ve come up with five distinct sewing personalities, loosely inspired by cognitive functions that influence how we perceive and engage with the world around us. I believe that understanding your sewing personality type can help you embrace your natural approach to sewing, let go of those “should” statements, and ultimately derive more joy from your sewing hobby.

Disclaimer: None of us ever fit neatly into a single category of any kind. You might find that you relate to more than one sewing personality and that’s completely fine. This quiz is meant to be a fun way for us sewists to explore broader archetypes and get a little glimpse into our creative psyches.

How do you feel about starting a new sewing project?
