Heart-Shaped Fabric Coaster Free Sewing Pattern and Tutorial
Today I have a free fabric coaster sewing pattern and tutorial for you. This is a quick and easy sewing project that is beginner friendly and perfect for handmade gifts.
The sewing tutorial gives instructions on View A of the heart-shaped fabric coaster, which is a simple quilted version.
If you’d like to try View B, which features a fabric ribbon accent and is more suitable for mix-and-matching fabrics, I’ve included that version as a free bonus at the end of the blog post.

Use the rectangle shape to cut the following pieces:
- Backing piece x 1
- Fusible fleece or batting or felt x 1
- Main fabric x 1

Place the main fabric piece right side up on top of the batting.
Set the stitch length to 3.5 mm for quilting.
Using a 1.5 cm or 5/8 in spacing, quilt the main fabric to the batting in your preferred pattern (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal lines).
I kept it simple for mine.

On the wrong side of your backing fabric, use tailor’s chalk or an erasable pen to trace a heart with your heart-shaped pattern piece. Mark the notches.

Place the quilted piece and backing fabric right sides together.

Now with the wrong side of the backing fabric facing you, stitch along the traced heart shape. Start at one of the notches you marked earlier and sew around the heart outline until the other notch, leaving a gap between them. Begin and end stitching with a backstitch to secure the seams.

Trim the rectangle down to roughly a 0.6 cm or 1/4 in seam allowance around the heart shape.
Clip right across the point at the bottom of the heart.
Clip into the seam allowance at the inner curves where the two heart curves meet, without cutting into the stitching. Cut notches into the curves of the heart shape.

Carefully pull the fabric through the gap to turn the coaster right side out.
Use a blunt tool (like a knitting needle or chopstick) to push out the edges and create a smooth heart shape.

Fold in the seam allowance in the gap on the side of the coaster and press well.
To close the gab you have two options. You could use a slip stitch or invisible stitch to sew the gap shut.

You could also topstitch around the heart to sew down the folded seam allowance. It will look something like the picture below.

All done! Experiment with different quilting patterns and make a set for yourself or loved ones. As a bonus, here are the pattern pieces and sewing instructions for View B.
