A few tips on sewing cardigans

Sewing knits (especially sweater fabrics) can sometimes be fiddly and leave you with stretched seams and bagged-out shapes. To help avoid this, here are a few tools that I find genuinely helpful when handling knits

  • Fusible Knit Stay Tape: This is super handy for stabilising areas that that tend to stretching like button bands.
  • A Walking Foot: If your machine doesn’t have a differential feed, you may find that your seams always stretch out and look wavy. A walking foot has teeth that grip the top layer of fabric and move it at the same rate as the machine’s feed dogs move the bottom layer to help prevent wavy seams.
  • A Tricot (Knit) Presser Foot: For smaller areas where a walking foot might feel like a tonne of extra work, I use my knit foot. It’s a snap-on foot with a small rubber pad that helps grip and push the top layer of fabric forward, mimicking the action of a walking foot.
