Best 3 Tips For Writing Achievable Sewing Resolutions

Creating achievable resolutions can significantly enhance your sewing experience. In this blog post, I’ll go through some tips to help you create resolutions that are not only specific and measurable but also aligned with your interests, and hopefully, help you have a more fulfilling sewing journey.

Tip 1: Set Specific and Measurable Goals

  • Avoid Ambiguity: Instead of general aims such as “sew more,” write down more precise objectives like “complete one project per month,” “master a new sewing technique bi-weekly,” or “design three custom garments by the end of the year.”
  • Track Progress: Compare your progress against your goals for accountability. Share this with a sewing buddy IRL or in some of the many sewing communities online. I personally love Threads.

Tip 2: Prioritise Your Enjoyment

Understand what aspects of sewing bring you the most joy and satisfaction and give yourself permission to let go of the rest. Itโ€™s easy to think that you must have this upward progression when it comes to skills and the types of items you sew. If something about sewing is bumming you out, you donโ€™t have to keep doing it.

Tailor your resolutions to align with the interests you have identified. For instance, if creating garments sparks your creativity, focus your goals on honing those skills. Alternatively, if quilting is your forte, set objectives around exploring new quilt patterns or techniques. Centering your resolutions around your interests makes the sewing journey more gratifying.

Tip 3: Regularly Review and Adjust

Dedicate time each month to review your sewing progress and celebrate what you have achieved, no matter how big or small. This will help you stay motivated on your sewing journey. You could even share something on social media or with friends in real lifeโ€”almost like those โ€˜What I Sewed in [insert year]โ€™ videos we watch on YouTube, but recapping a month or season of sewing. Additionally, use this time to readjust your goals if they seem unrealistic, if life circumstances change, or if you develop new interests. Itโ€™s important to stay flexible with your hobbies.

The sewing quote below resonates with me, especially as it relates to being intentional about setting aside time for sewing. In this case, it applies to dedicating time for a monthly review.

โ€œPlan for Sewing Time. Make an appointment with yourself to sew, just as you would with your hairdresser, or with a neighbor to go shopping.โ€
